There are a lot of great things I could say about the Laurent Ferrier Tourbillon Double Hairspring, but perhaps the greatest is that this watch, more than any other watch in the world, is the one that I’ve most heard collectors describe as their “exit watch” – in other words, if they had to get rid of every other watch in their collection, except one, and exit the hobby…this is the watch they would choose. There is no higher praise than that. For this watch to stir such strong feelings, it must be firing on all cylinders…and I can see why.
Let’s start with the most obvious – the dial. It is made of enamel, arguably one of the greatest materials for a dial. And the enamel is utilized to maximal benefit. The white background is perfect and the numerals are crisp, but the best part is the contrast with the more faint printing of the seconds subdial, and the almost ghostlike text “TOURBILLON DOUBLE SPIRAL” on the dial. Laurent Ferrier likes being discreet by not displaying the tourbillon through the dial, and the ultra-faint text means even the text will similarly only reveal itself under close inspection.
That brings us to the rest of the aesthetics. The case is an excellent modern take on a classical design, the hands have needle-like precision, and the whole package cohesively blends together into a design DNA that is easily recognizeable as belonging to Laurent Ferrier.
Lastly, and most importantly, is the movement. This watch is the first one with a tourbillon fitted with a double balance-spring, which neutralizes the lateral displacement of the balance axis. The movement also has Laurent Ferrier’s own escapement mechanism to further improve precision – and the result is chronometer-level precision. And to top it all off, let’s not forget the amazing finishing on the movement!
